Sculpted bronze plaques are reserved for the most prestigious memorial and commemorative events. If you want more than an embossed version of a 2D graphic design, sculpted bronze plaques give you that. You don't have to be limited to just text and flat relief on your plaque. Using sculpture techniques rather than just 2D graphic design gives you the freedom to add intricate 3D decoration to your creative options.

Using the sculpture technique of bas-relief you can have 3D:-

  • Portraits of people or animals
  • Emblems, badges or family crests
  • Memorial or commemorative vignettes
  • Sculpted borders
  • Buildings or landscapes
  • Vehicles
  • Decorative lettering

"When our founding trustee sadly passed away, a bronze relief so skillfully crafted by Carl proved to be both a perfect likeness and a simple but elegant memorial, admired by all our Museum volunteers and staff."

Case Study: The KICS Sculpted Bronze Portrait Plaque

A good example of how this works is how we managed the sculpted portrait plaque for the KICS organisation in Khartoum, Sudan. It wasn't possible for someone to come here to see the sculpture. To get around the problem, taking into consideration the different time zone and their working hours we emailed them daily. We sent them numerous mock-ups, sketches and sculpture photos as the design progressed. They sent back any comments regarding alterations. It took about 5 weeks of sending daily progress reports before they approved the final design.

How long does it take to have a sculpture made?

The time it takes to make a sculpture depends on the complexity and scale of it. A typical example would be a portrait sculpture. These take about 4-5 weeks to deliver. If you need more than one person in the sculpture then this will take longer. Also it depends if the sculpture is being copied directly from a photograph or drawing. If you don't have you own artwork please allow extra time for the development of ours.

What size can the sculpture be?

We can sculpt a bas-relief for any size plaque. The limitation isn't the sculpture but what can be reproduced by the foundry casting process. If we use sand casting then there is a limit on the quality of very small details. To get around this we will chase (cut and file) details back into the finished bronze plaque. If this is not possible sometimes we can cast sculptures with very fine details separately using the lost wax technique and mechanically fix it to the plaque later.

How do you make sure I get my perfect plaque?

To make sure you get exactly what you want, your plaque will go through various approval stages. We will have numerous discussions either in person, on the phone or by email. As we progress from initial concepts to sketches, drawing and the final sculpture we will get your approval along the way. If you like you can come here to see the actual sculpture. Other options are that we will send you a plaster or resin cast of the final sculpture.
